The focus of positive attention they provide for children is valuable and beautiful. This is also true of dogs, however.
They're cute, they have their own distinct personalities, they're curious. The primary reason I, personally, prefer cats over dogs is that you (usually) have to earn the affection, or least lack-of-indifference, of a cat.
The supression of their "kill everything" desire is basically to keep them enclosed such that they can still run and play but not destroy the local fauna. Not an easy or cheap task, depending on one's living conditions.
