I think Atlassian is Australian

Atlassian started in Australia, it's now footprinted in several countries, and this story took place in the American arm.

It's interesting as the full complaint is centred on the differences between what the founders have put out as Atlassian values | practices re: sick dayas and paid time off vs what the engineer in question experienced.

It reads very much like the difference between Australian (mostly standard) working conditions and US company conditions.

If the company PR wonks are projecting that all Atlassian employees in all countries are getting Australian holidays and sick leave conditions and they're not, then that is a genuine problem.

Australia is black and white - you get your 20 days a year annual leave, no exceptions, its the law. If you don't take your leave, it gets paid out.

US companies love to do the con job of "unlimited" PTO which, surprise surprise, is bullshit.

If an Australian company denies leave for whatever reason, its actually worse for them as accrued leave gets paid out at your current salary and they also need to account for it as a financial liability.
