Social media has consolidated people's attention onto a small number of platforms, e.g. Google/Youtube, Facebook/Instagram, X, Reddit, etc. Over the years, I've slowly divorced myself from each of these platforms (most recently Reddit where I was a moderator of r/MachinLearning), due to concerns that I'm helping entrench these tech giants.
How do you promote yourself and your work without utilizing these popular platforms? For example, many people I've seen who left Twitter for Mastodon are back on X.
I've been thinking of starting a blog, but it's hard to attract attention without posting on a widely used platform. My goal isn't to attract lots of attention for attention's sake, but merely to be part of the conversation, which seems harder and harder to do as I've lowered my digital footprint.
I'm generally a pragmatist, which makes me think maybe I should go back; why make things more difficult for myself. On the other hand I have a strong desire to take active measures to address concerns like media/tech consolidation, hence why I've deactivated my accounts.
Happy to hear any thoughts you have!
