Good article. This same critique applies equally well to technology in macrocosm. We need to ask:

- how does it really work?

- what are its dependencies?

- what are its failure modes?

- what are its side effects?

- why are we doing it this way?

- how long will it keep working?

- are there any alternatives?

- if so, why aren't they in use?

- and what can we do about it?

This is particularly crucial with regard to materials and energy, as well as social norms, societal institutions, and cultural expectations.
