This kind of reminds me of Yahoo! News a long time ago, which (if I remember right) would append "Yahoo!" to the start of all news headlines. So one might get, "Yahoo! Tornado kills 5 in Kansas"
Who is the “audience” of this email(?) and what is the context? And is this a legitimate email? The “from” email address at the top does not match the signature email address at the bottom.
It was posted on the comp.risks Usenet group. comp.risks is a forum & newsletter established in the 1980s for the discussions of the potential risks of computer technology failures in society, e.g. software bugs in critical infrastructure. Back when the Internet was small, it was a very popular group for anyone interested in infosec and frequently read by many sysadmins and programmers. In a sense, the audience is somewhat similar to today's Hacker News readers.
It's an interesting observation that many hypothetical issues discussed by the members back then (e.g. people get wrongful convicted of crimes due to a software bug) has become a reality.
It's not an email address. Many people didn't use a real address in the header because of spam, and Usenet doesn't really care if it a valid email address or not at a protocol level.
Usenet didn’t do any validation on headers so it could have been either an attempt at spam control (it wasn’t uncommon to download headers but not bodies to reduce network traffic) or possibly that they had an internal news hostname which leaked due to a configuration error?
