As someone who has spent hundreds of hours playing/replaying the elder scrolls and fallout games (among others) I have to respectfully disagree that replay value is an issue with RPG computer games. The modding community that exist around these type of games also add an immense amount of content and additional replay value. tRPGs are great and most definitely still have a place, particularly as a social role-playing experience.
I guess that depends on your definition of "modern history". Yes, Apple has a lot of cash, but is their current top corp based on value mean they are bigger in influence/effect on people's lives than others in history. I'm thinking AT&T pre-breakup, Standard Oil, rail roads, etc. I understand what the point the GP was making. It just sent me down a tangential bit of thinking. Ugh, and on a Saturday!
Interesting thoughts. I think a lot of this comparing Apple to the companies you listed is the wrong way to think about them.
First, it's not just Apple. The App Store/ecosystem concept is a newish concept, and probably needs completely new types of regulation outside of anti-trust. Apple, Google, MS, Sony, Nintendo, etc... are for the most part monopolies in their respective worlds, but fail at the traditional monopoly definition. Waiting for a company to achieve an AT&T or Standard Oil level level of power is an outdated way of thinking. Apple also doesn't have anywhere near that level of power.
A lot of creators have multiple revenue streams that one can support (merch, patreon, affiliate links). Not watching youtube ads does not have to mean you are hurting creators.
Not watching YouTube ads means they get less money. Yes, there are still alternatives for them to eek out some revenue, but they are making less than if you just watched the ad or got YT premium
This is anecdotal, but it seems like most career youtube creators are only relying on youtube ad revenue for a small portion of their total income. Video claims and unreliable monetization have long plagued youtube so it makes sense for creators to look to things like brand deals and patreon for the majority of their income. I’d much rather not watch ads and then compensate for it by supporting them through some other means.
There’s much more than just find my. For a start, other apps can’t really run in background, and can’t get reliable access to location, that’s crucial for something like this (even if you allow app to access your location, iOS will still keep on asking users periodically to disable it).
All of those things are done for good of the platform, to limit abuse form other apps, sure. But it’s also conveniently giving apple’s products unfair advantage.
Wasn’t expecting a mention of Marc on HN, but I was pleasantly surprised. Things that bring true joy are easily worth £1000 :). Happy playing/composing!
Would love to subscribe to the newsletter but I get redirected to app.convertkit...... which asks me to make an account which shouldn't be necessary for a newsletter?
