Why every Indian programmer has a burdon to prove that he/she is not an IT coolie ? How's is that less racist than some redneck assuming all black people are thugs ?
I am from Hyderabad, India and felt racist reading that title - "IT coolies". I believe the author just want to make headline.
A lot of innovation happens that gets unnoticed in Silicon Valley or around the world. People here do not have access to mentorship & peer network so easily (openly available in California), still being self-motivated and connected by reading tech blogs, advises, etc. Just top of my head are following two examples.
Can't be more true. There won't be any outrage if the jobs were outsourced to Hungary or Estonia where cost is comparable to India. Because subconsciously, Western power and western people needs poor brown/black nations to make themselves feel better.
China manipulates its currency, disregards WTO standards and blatantly prevents foreign companies from dominating their market. Not to mention you have to hand over your company secrets to them if you need their 1.3B market access.
On the other hand, India is much more transparent and follows open market, Any foreign company can freely operate there without being feared of getting disadvantaged over local competition.
Btw, USA and other western power blatantly bullies India and other third world countries alike. When India started making cheap solar panels, USA dragged them to court. In the 90s, India started producing cheap fertilizers for their farmers.. oops, big daddy us doesn't likes it because it hurts the interest of Monsanto. So stop playing this US vs Them game.
Such nation of hypocrites. Takes proud in Democracy and free market capitalism but hates when it plays out on the world stage.
Not to mention: the US continue billions in dollars of farm subsidies for corn, wheat and cotton making them artificially cheap and thus making farmers of other nations (especially India) noncompetitive in the global market.
Wow, such passive racism on HN. H1b is mostly targeted because it is associated with Indians. Are those sweet Canadians not stealing American jobs on TN visa ? Are your Australian mates not getting american jobs on E-3 visa ? Oh wait, they look white so no problem. But you see bunch of brown folks suddenly moving into your neighbourhood and think.. Geez.. These foreignours took'urrr'job.
Yes, like any government program, it is been abused but there are more than enough high paying jobs available in Tech. Indians are one of the richest demographics in USA. If Indians are such a low wage misers, what happens overnight ?
Only solution of h1b visa is to allow free movement of switching jobs. Right now a h1b worker is practically a slave of his/her employer which companies like TCS, Infosys exploits freely.
Well inflation may have increased but as per pew research wages are stagnated for decades (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/10/09/for-most-wor...) . In that narrative, this increase is unfair to companies outside of SF/NYC area and also unfair to students who came to USA for studies.
This is a blatant hypocrisy on American side. They will sue the shit out of Indian Solar, Pharma, Angri industries if it has competitive prices but won't allow india/emerging nations to do the same in their market. Emerging nations are bullied by developed nations for a long time and the saga goes on. I get that H1b visa was used to provide cheap services but globalization works both way. Powerful nations can't just enact the laws which only works in their favor.
Basically USA has long history of suing Indian companies which competes with their product in Indian market. Some examples..
(1) The US Said India's Solar Power Plan Discriminates Against American Companies — And the WTO Agrees - https://news.vice.com/article/the-us-said-indias-solar-power...
(2) Indian pharma companies legally trying to make cheap generic version. Nope, big boss USA doesn't like it because it is against 'globalization'.
But when Indian companies tries to compete in the market by providing cheap services, Nope. Sorry, Can't do.
Basically the post world war II history is all about enacting the laws to the maintain the hegemony of selected few elite countries. S. Korea and Japan were lucky in that regards as sympathy of west was on their side but emerging countries like China, India and Brazil are screwed.
I think we've seen throughout history that what you listed above is largely possible for powerful nations. It is a "benefit" of being a powerful nation to express that power. This is much more an optimization problem than a logical debate.
