Here's good companion article on the importance of Model Context Protocol (MCP) for AI agents: https://www.pingcap.com/blog/why-fresh-data-sql-and-unified-...

Not only are these companies using TiDB, they're also contributing to it as you can see in this recent blog post: https://medium.com/@ray.paik/tidb-8-5-is-here-b2ca09e972d5

> I think the best way would be something similar to the Linux Foundation. Companies in need of a certain type of database would pool resources to develop and maintain it.

Disclaimer: I currently work at PingCAP and previously worked at the Linux Foundation.

Foundation (whether it's the LF or others) isn't a panacea either. It's fine when projects get started and there are plenty of willing member companies, but for many projects, companies often lose interest, need to cut down on open source related investments, etc. and the project funding dwindles. The reality is that the member companies need to both fund and provide software developers for projects, and it's difficult to expect them to keep the same commitment for more than a few years these days....

If you’re looking for the TiKV project link: https://github.com/tikv/tikv

Thanks.

Is your main issue with the VC funding, the CLA, or the combination of both. Doesn’t Kubernetes (hosted by the Linux Foundation) also have a CLA?

Wouldn't that be a challenge for most cloud native db's? Are there cloud db's that are easier to self-host?

I couldn't see anything that made it especially cloud native, it doesn't rely on any cloud services - it's just a bunch of containers.

Even if a project/company doesn't have a CLA, I don't think that is any sort of guarantee that their license won't change in the future.

Following up on this...

@bcantril, what were your initial reasons for choosing CockroachDB?

We outlined that in detail in RFD 110.[0]

Thanks for pointing that out. I've also seen missing "enterprise edition" labels in some MRs and can make a request to GitLab team members not to forget about the enterprise label.

First of all, thanks for being a GitLab contributor. Could you share other features you're concerned about? (If you have a link to issues that'd be great)

Description change history just landed as a paid feature.

Repository push mirroring is available in CE, but pull mirroring is a paid feature.
