Word of warning: at some companies “solutions engineer” just means “demo monkey.” The sales people don’t really know how the product works or how to use it, so you are brought in to do the demo and answer questions and that’s about it (and you’re compensated much less well than the sales people).
I have heard this from execs at public companies as well. I think a HUGE part of this appetite is that today no one has yet been subjected to doing business on a bunch of apps cobbled together by vibe coders.
They are just hearing the promise that AI will allow them to build custom software that perfectly melds to their needs in no time at all, and think it sounds great.
I suspect the early adopters who go this route are going to be in for a rude awakening that AI hasn’t actually solved a lot of hard problems in custom software development.
In the world of B2B software many of the 'hard problems in custom software development' have not been solved by human coders either - it can be an extremely grim market for anyone who cares about software quality. I'm completely unconvinced that on average a vibe-coded app is worse than the typical B2B slop.
TailwindUI isn't really what I'd consider SaaS -- it was a buy once and download software product.
That means to keep making money they need keep selling new people. According to them, their only marketing channel was the Tailwind docs, AI made it so not nearly as many people needed to visit the tailwind docs.
If they had gone with the subscription SaaS model, they'd probably be a little better off, as they would have still had revenue coming in from their existing users.

No, but they care about how quickly new features can be added and how frequently bugs pop up. And clean code still impacts both of those, even in when AI writes the code (or writes articles like this).
To me this tenacity is often like watching someone trying to get a screw into board using a hammer.
There’s often a better faster way to do it, and while it might get to the short term goal eventually, it’s often created some long term problems along the way.

I understand maintaining backwards compatibility, but the non-strict behavior is just so insane I have a hard time imagine it doesn’t bite most developers who use SQLite at some point.

SQLite makes strong backwards-compatibility guarantees. How many apps would be broken if an Android update suddenly defaulted its internal copy of SQLite to STRICT? Or if it decided to turn on foreign keys by default?
Those are rhetorical questions. Any non-0 percentage of affected applications adds up to a big number for software with SQLite's footprint.
Software pulling the proverbial rug out from under downstream developers by making incompatible changes is one of the unfortunate evils of software development, but the SQLite project makes every effort to ensure that SQLite doesn't do any rug-tugging.
Nearly every default setting in sqlite is "wrong" from the outset, for typical use cases. I'm surprised packages that offer a sane configuration out of the box aren't more popular.
I bought the book of his work that was on kickstarter a few years ago, because ski maps are something I've always kind of loved.
Honestly it was a little disappointing -- the maps in the book are just the paintings of the mountains/terrain, no trail/lift/amenity markings, and thumbing threw it for a little while, they all kind of look exactly the same.
Trails and lifts change and get renamed over the years so they aren’t painted by James. They’re added by the ski resort later so in James’s book, he shared his raw paintings not the augmentation done by the resort.
I wonder if that’s an artistic decision or a reflection of how the work is split up between the painter and the resorts. But I agree, it’s more interesting to see the finished maps with all the runs and lifts.
You should shop around! Some of the MVNOs are offering unlimited fast data at a similar price these days, and something similar to what you have now for cheaper.

It's perhaps worth noting for others that there are 3 different tiers of service with Visible, ranging from $25 to $45 -- although all 3 are "unlimited."
(I can't tell the difference between them, myself, with my phone in my use.)
I second this! I switched to mint recently. They are offering unlimited data including hotspot for $15/mo for up to a year if you prepay. I think then it goes to their standard rate which is $30/mo for unlimited, or $15/mo for 5gb.
Yeah, I feel like the major providers must be coasting on people who just dont bother looking into it and ares till on the same $100 plan they've been on forever (this was me until recently) and people who really want new flagship phones all the time but can't afford them outright, so they finance with a postpaid plan.
