Hi Peter, thank you for doing this AMA. I am on H1B and I recently lost my job. I only have about 50 days left to get a new job but I have a spouse who is on his own H1B. I wanted to see and find out legal and smooth options to buy more time for myself to find a new job - If anything, it would be those options that do not need me to leave the country and get stamping, if at all. My country of citizenship is India, by the way. If you can help us out, it would be really great. Thank you.

The best and easiest option because your spouse is in H-1B status is to apply to change your status to dependent H-4 status using USCIS Form I-539. As long as this is filed during your grace period, you can remain in the U.S. while the application is pending/until it is approved.

What happens if / when you eventually find a job? Can you file another change of status to a H1B? Does the status of the original change of status app matter? (e.g., can you apply for a COS to H1 while the COS to H4 is still pending?)

Thank you!

Yes, a COS from H-4 to H-1B is an option. However, if the H-4 COS is still pending, you might not be able to get the H-1B petition approved as a change of status but all this means is that to "activate" the approved H-1B petition, you would need to leave the U.S. and reenter with your existing visa stamp (obtained through the previous company) or leave the U.S. and apply for an H-1B visa (if you don't have a valid H-1B visa stamp obtained through the previous company).

Yeah I've seen this problem for years as well. To block it, there wasn't much of a direct solution besides using a custom filter that matches on the text inside the element.

When did Ethics and Facebook ever come in the same line, lol!

Well, go for it! Your recommendation is still valuable to me. I'm in a haze and insights like these are more helpful than you think!

Thank you for the insight. Much appreciated. Sad to know windows updates is still a problem after 10 years lol

This actually quite strange- I run 2 laptops with Windows Insider (beta releases) and I reboot once 2-3 weeks because of updates. From time to time, they may have updates spree, like near release dates, but it's couple times per year I think.

Cannot say I'm bothered by updates at all. On stable builds it should happen even less often.

Well, I rather meant the screen quality, keyboard and build quality etc.

I'm aware that there is no other CPU that offers the same performance per watt as the M1 does, but it looks like the latest Ryzen and The Intel Evo CPUs have come a long way.

I'm guessing you haven't ever laid hands upon or used a MBP. The screen quality and build quality are untouchable as well.

Keyboard is definitely a personal choice, and Apple had a multi-year stretch of terrible keyboards, but they're back to being good IMO.

I have both a new Dell XPS 15 with Intel i7 and a 16" M1 MBP on my desk right now... it's really no comparison. You really need to base it on whether you need Windows-specific software or you simply prefer it. Even some of the Windows/x86 apps I need turn out to run without issue with Windows 11 for ARM via Parallels Desktop on the M1...

"I'm guessing you haven't ever laid hands upon or used a MBP"

Nope, my work forces macbook pros upon all of us and I've been using one with an Intel CPU for years. I don't like it because it's constantly going off (the fans always spinning), and gets insanely hot. It also slows down a good deal for anything intensive. I never liked it really.

I don't like Mac OsX all that much either and felt they have a weird ux,but that's not a deal breaker though. More than anything the fact that wsl performance on windows is close to bare metal seems to entice me a bit

Yeah, one of my personal laptops is a 2019 16" MBP with Intel i9. It's hot, loud, and slow. Just like the work issued XPS 15.

This is what I am worried about. If it's anywhere the same with M1 then I would just rather bail out of Macbooks and go straight to Windows.

That's what I was saying in my first post though. The M1 suffers none of this. It's playing in a different league than other laptops.

Interesting that no one mentioned Netflix, which originally started off as nothing more than a rentals company.

Netflix is a cool one but the transition from rentals to streaming feels more like a natural progression than a pivot.

If it was so natural, a single high level executive at Blockbuster should've seen it coming. Accessible and cheap servers, exponentially increasing internet speeds, and smart devices all happening at once was society-altering. It seems obvious in retrospect but it's just tough to spot.

It’s was natural, but also bold. Established companies rarely do bold.

It also wasn’t obvious.

AFAIK they're far more sustainable since they need nowhere near the amount of land, water, resources and food as the animals in the dairy and meat industries do. This, and further minus all the torture, suffering and force-feeding

I think fake meat will be important in the future because there is no way we can eat the amount of meat and dairy that we do without many negatives. That said, there is a level of sustainable livestock. Cows can graze on natural grass lands, eating a plants that humans can't digest anyway. Pigs can mostly eat agricultural waste product. Chickens can eat cover crops. The fact that land is cleared for grazing and animals are fed crops is due to the amount of meat people eat could never be met through natural means.

Or we could eat like our grandparents used to eat back in the 50s-60s, at least in France meat was still a fairly occasional thing, you bought a good cut of meat every now and then and enjoyed it. Today we chug gallons of processed meat at every meal, most of it being bad on both the nutritional and taste aspect.

thanks, decided on the 32GB.

Thank you. I am in a similar boat to yours and looks like 32GB is a minimum for me at this point
