Heinlein meant the book literally and not as a farse or satire.

Yes, that's what I'm meant, I just worded it ambiguously. Let me make it more explicit:

The movie was disliked by:

- Fans of Heinlein, who took offense at what they thought was a mocking and misunderstanding of the source material.

- People unfamiliar with Heinlein, and also with Verhoeven, who failed to understand the movie was satirical and thought it was actually endorsing a weird mix of Beverly Hills 9210 and fascism.

In case you wonder, I have read Heinlein (not just Starship Troopers) and know what he meant. I also appreciate Verhoeven!

This reminds me, I've wanted to make a bot to automatically upvote the most downvoted posts in a thread with the HN api. I'd call it anti-echochamber.HN or something like that.

I surf with showdead on and often find myself upvoting grey comments that don't seem factually incorrect or rude, perhaps just espousing an unpopular opinion. But man, a lot of grey comments are correctly moderated. I'd leave the most downvoted ones alone for sure.

No template. No figures. No attempt. This shouldn't be on Arxiv. Vixra was created for such low effort content.

Behavior like this is why I unironically have lost the mythos of "teachers are good for society" as default thinking. I get why Mao/Pol Pot/Communists through history lined them up against walls.

Most, even in America, are little tyrants who has entirely far too much power to pick and choose the winners and losers of society. A single bad teacher acts like a whole bucket of crabs pulling down on soon-to-be-succesful youth.

This is FUD and extremely wrong. None of the advancements have followed an S curve. This time IS different and it should be obvious to you at this point.

This is radical life denial. I was not born for and do not exist to toil. Work is ontologically evil.

No, THIS is radical denial. You WERE born to toil for your survival.

Sounds like a slogan for slavery.

Survival is not "slavery".. it's a basic function of evolution.

The plastic bobbles and SaaS economy that is actively destroying our planet seems like the opposite of survival. We're collectively working ourselves into the death of our planet just because how else do we pay the bills?

Also sounds like a great rationalization.

You were evolved to struggle. This is actually very clear from psychiatric literature.

"Work" is human activity. For example, children's play is work. All living things desire to go about their lives. Well-adjusted humans desire to work. Note that this does not necessarily equate to jobs.

What? Children's play is now work? What timeline are we living in? Is this real life?

Of course it is. Play is a very basal behavior we see in a host of species among their young. Its biological role is to build up musculature and social bonding such that the individual will be strong enough and socialized enough to do what is required to survive among the colony/pack/tribe.

> Work is ontologically evil.

Statements that have been utterly ridiculous from the dawn of life to modernity, backfilled to conveniently fit the zeitgeist.

Go look at recent changes to how young men vote and tell me which groups shouldn't be allowed to vote in the future.

Good.

Much as chess frustrated the great game masters like bobby fischer for being too easily "gamable" with opening books, I find that the mods for games like nethack, i.e. SLASHEM et al, make it where even if you try to spoil it, the massive amount of new content combined with the relative lack of documentation force you to git gud.

Is it possible to access wizard mode on the web version? I suppose I could just clone it and run locally and implement it if not, but would be nice if it's already there to know how to trigger it.

Yes, it's supported. It's one of the "initialization" options when you start a new game.
